How to Use the Grappling Hook in Resonance Combat
Learn grappling hook combat techniques — pulling enemies, environmental kills, archer takedowns, and battlefield control.
Grappling Hook Basics
Sophia's grappling hook is a versatile tool that serves both combat and exploration roles in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. In combat, it pulls enemies toward Sophia or yanks them off ledges into environmental hazards. In exploration, it helps reach elevated platforms and cross gaps within the Minotaur's Island labyrinth.
Activate the grappling hook with R1 on PS5, RB on Xbox, or Middle Mouse/G on PC. Aim at a valid target — highlighted enemies, hook points, or ledge edges — and release to execute the pull. The hook has range limitations, so positioning matters before each engagement.
Combat Applications
Against archers on elevated positions, the grappling hook is essential. Pull archers off their perches to stun them on impact, then follow with light attacks or a critical strike while they recover. This eliminates ranged threats without exposing Sophia to arrow fire during a manual climb.
Near ledges and pits, hook enemies and pull them directly into hazards for instant kills. Environmental kills do not always grant health restoration, but they remove threats efficiently without depleting Sophia's limited health pool. Preview footage shows Sophia pulling soldiers off cliff edges and into spike traps.
The Echo's Return skill enhances grappling hook utility by allowing Sophia to grab an attacking enemy mid-swing and throw them into nearby allies, causing area stun damage. This skill does not work against yellow or red telegraphed attacks — use it during standard enemy swings.
Exploration and Traversal
Outside combat, hook points appear on walls, ceilings, and across gaps. These traversal anchors let Sophia reach areas inaccessible by standard jumping or vaulting. The Minotaur's Island labyrinth hides collectibles and missable swords behind hook-accessible paths — scan for metallic anchor points after clearing each combat zone.
Combine grappling hook traversal with sphere puzzles for multi-step exploration sequences. Some preview areas required hooking to an upper platform, then using the Minoan Sphere to activate a light puzzle visible only from the elevated position.
Advanced Hook Combos
Expert players chain hook pulls into kick-guardbreak-critical sequences. Pull a shield enemy off balance, kick to break guard during the pull animation, and critical strike before they recover. This combo eliminates heavy enemies faster than standard sword exchanges.
Practice hook timing alongside parry and dodge fundamentals covered in our parry combat guide. The grappling hook is most powerful when used to control enemy positioning before engaging with sword combos, not as a replacement for core melee mechanics.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I aim the grappling hook?
Enter aim mode with the grappling hook button, target highlighted enemies or hook points, and release to pull.
Can the hook pull all enemy types?
Most standard enemies can be pulled. Heavy armored enemies may resist pulls and require guard breaks first.
Does the hook work in stealth?
Yes. Pull unaware enemies from ledges for silent environmental kills without entering combat stance.
Is there a hook cooldown?
Preview builds show no significant cooldown, but range and target availability limit spam usage.
